A tiny universe in a petri dish: detailed descriptions of specific places, niche artisan expertise, types of people in different classes. Each character in this book is struggling against themselves and the expectations of Chinese society, which the reader gets to experience a glimpse of throughout this story that ends on a surprisingly hopeful note.

An ambiguous, puzzle box of a book with a main character who would fit in a Philip K. Dick novel. What’s not to like?
