Once again, reading about Cadderlys adventures is always a good time.
I find it very interesting to read about Cadderlys spiritual journey as a priest of Deneir, as well as reading about the moral and ethical quandaries he has to face.

Graphic: Body horror, Sexual violence, Physical abuse, and Injury/Injury detail
There exists an exploitative, symbiotic relationship between two characters. As the book progresses more is revealed about the violent, abusive, and cruel acts they’ve perpetrated. Most of the violence is implied rather than described explicitly. I do feel that this is important for the way the particular character needs to be portrayed, but it can get dark and heavy.nefilibata's review against another edition

This is the story where Cadderly really comes into his own. He has grand, God given powers. He has allies that stand beside him through thick and thin. He has grown from an unsure youth to a confident adult.
The most interesting part of this book is how I feel it could actually stand on its own. Without the two preceeding books. But the fact that Cadderly took this long to develop as a character really shows his morally strong core.
This story is a satisfying narrative with a wholesome crew. A solid four stars

Night Masks is easier to get through than the first two books.

Continuing my reread of this series, I think each book has progressively gotten better. Perhaps this is because as the characters become more established, Salvatore can play around with their growth more, put them in more interesting situations, and spend less time just saying who they are. Either way, Night Masks is yet another improvement on the previous book.
I think the most compelling thing about this series is Cadderly's inner turmoil and crisis of faith. Clerics tend to be supporting characters in most D&D stories, and I really love reading something when they are front and center. It is a great exploration of what this process and discovering you are a chosen person by a god would be like.
I think what works particularly well is that Cadderly never falls into self wallowing pity the way many heroes journeys seem to.
Ghost in this story is also a really solid villain, if a bit one dimensional.
Overall, this was a fun, if not deep read, and I am looking forward to diving into book four in a few months :)

Not my favorite of the quintet, but still a decent read.
