I give this book 1 and 1/2 stars because it was unnecessarily long, dull, slow pace and it didn't live up to my expectations. However, it was reasonably priced.

I had high hopes for this book since it had all of my favourite elements: historical setting, science fiction, romance, damsel in distress (but this damsel was seriously dull and meek) and an otherworldly dangerous immortal hero from a distant planet who abducts/saves the heroine from her abusive husband. add the existence of other super intelligent, highly advanced species and you've got the ingredient for a really exciting plot.

The year is 1359 and Isla, who's parents have died 11 years ago is unhappy and praying for freedom from her miserable marriage of 14 years to a verbal and physically abusive husbanded. However, a ghostly presence watches over her and gives her comfort but her beloved sister Cora (who is daring and adventurous and altogether more interesting) and nanny think its all in her mind and are worried for her sanity. Her ghostly hero, Nate, intervenes and rescues her when things become too violent and takes her into his world to recover and to find out why she is the only one who can see him.

I expected the pace of the story to pick up and become more complex and interesting since the hero is from and magical and technologically advanced, immortal species who have influenced human religion, myths and legends. however, I found the pace of the story really dull and tedious and the narration of the story (which shifted between h/h) focused on inner dialogues and stilted awkward exchanges between h/h.

The romance and physical attraction between them is not believable since they are mismatched and the only thing they have in common is their emotional scares. Isla is timid and in need of constant reassurance from Nate and those around her. In contrast, Nate is a ferocious blood thirsty warrior who spent several millenniums getting his jollies on and putting down many rebellious species in the name of his people. However, Nate is a man (so to speak) of little words and even less emotion due to emotional scares in his past and because of this he is weary of getting into serious a relationship. The supposed romance between them is explained away as a mysteriously/metaphysically connection that shows she is his other half. As a result of this they are inseparable (like Edward and Bella without the sexual tension) both are reluctant to do anything about it until the end and even then it is disappointing.

However, I did find the supporting characters like Cora and Elijah, with their daring cheeky personality, both entertaining and interesting.
