Patricia Highsmith certainly seems to have a particular "type" romantically. And Carol (the character and the book) is an expression of that. Yet, while I can little identify with her appreciation of an imperious, cold and dismissive older woman as romantic ideal, I enjoy the conviction and honesty of her commitment to its realisation.

I come away from Carol feeling "well, your drives and tastes are not my own, but thank you for taking me on your journey." It was a heartfelt romance which largely consists in the relationships and interactions between women in a world run by men and for that I appreciate it.
