This was such a bittersweet story that focused on love and loss in various forms. I was really taken to the many poignant moments that tugged at your heartstrings— There was definitely one moment where I nearly teared up. Exploring themes of love and loss through ghosts and the afterlife was an interesting approach, making death a prominent part of the story and understanding of those themes.
The art style wasn’t anything particularly special, but it was eye-catching enough and captured a lot of the essence of what the story was trying to get at. I was particularly fond of the drawings of the grandparents for whatever reason.
I will say the ending was really abrupt, which left me with very mixed feelings. For one, I think it was a nice subversion from what you would normally expect after this contemplation of what love and loss might mean. However, it was just too abrupt with no further explanation and made me… mad? In some ways? I wish Curnow could have expanded more on this front.

Ghost Tree takes readers on an exploration through human emotion, lifetime regrets, and relationships. The story is set in a beautiful Japanese mountain town tucked away in a thriving forest, where one grandson visits his grandfather's ghost and discovers a whole world of spirits working through their own regrets, including ones they haven't identified as regrets yet. I thoroughly enjoyed this comic and highly recommend it.
