A stunning prayer of a book. Jones writes: "Nothing good in life comes without stirring--/the promise of butter, the salty whirring/of pressure in a pot." And these poems stir the pot of history and memory to create a word painting of great beauty and power.

Absolutely stunning novel - like a creation myth, Ashley M Jones weaves together history, current events and imagination to set new ideas about what it means to be an American.

Having read some of her later work, this earlier collection was naturally a step back. It was really cool to see her working through similar images and ideas, though, and because I’m very familiar with Birmingham, AL, it felt like talking to a (very poetic and passionate) neighbor.

I loved this. At times I would pause and take pictures of certain poems on my phone so that I could carry them with me everywhere.

Fantastic debut. However the amount of references I had to stop and look up in order to understand became cumbersome. I appreciated most but there were just barely too many to be pleasant.
