"if you truly possess this love for lesser things and if, by serving them, you can quietly win the trust of things that seem humble -- then everything will grow easier for you."

The Sonnets did nothing for me, but I can probably chalk a lot of that up to translation.

It was the Letters that I admired. I don't entirely trust the assertions -- that a poet needs to travel further and further inward, distanced as much as possible from the book-business and literary circles. But when I do want to believe it, it's nice to have an advocate in Rilke.

This was a great read, lots about nature and the human condition. My favorite sonnets were at the end of part 1 and the beginning of part 2. I loved having the original sonnet on one page and the translated sonnet on the other page.

Where is her death? Ah, will you introduce / that theme before your song expires? - / I can feel her drifting off... to where?... A / girl almost ...

all that's been wrested from doubt / I greet, the mouths opened again / after knowing well what silence means.

The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice has always been my favourite greek myth (ever since watching Portrait de la jeune fille en feu) and with all the talk of Hadestown on tiktok, i was itching to consume some form of the myth. unfortunately, i did not do enough research about this book at the sonnets are not actually about the myth so i didn't really get what i went in for, hence the lack of a rating.
great writing regardless, i've been meaning to read rilke's work for a long time so i'm glad i finally got to dip my toes.

Do you recognize me, air, full of places once mine?>

yet who can say? If they regret their fading / it is for us to be their regret?

Deeply mystic and deeply mysterious. I will have to return to the font of Rilke many times.
