It really pulled me in, made me laugh, as well as hold my breath while sitting at the edge of my seat, and cheer on multiple occasions. In this case the alternating POVs between the two main characters works really well and definitely adds a lot.
Now I'm going to look up other books by this author <3
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Sexism, Misogyny, and Classism
Minor: Alcohol, Grief, Injury/Injury detail, and Death of parent

I adored Lucy and Audrey and love how they played off each other and made each other grow.
The supporting cast was also great loved Lucy's cousin, Alexander his potential boyfriend? Matthew who came in as the friends you need in the climax of the book. Also well as Martha being the lovely mother figure Lucy need to *spoiler alert*
push her to choice herself!

the story felt like it didn’t suit a cusp of adulthood context, though that might just be personal preference. in 1812, freedom and love are central, but in 2023, love is far more tempered and the conflict arises from self confidence and identity. i wish the past featured more of the same search for purpose, and that the book was unabashed about being a romcom. the only thing worse than reading about teenagers who alter their lives for love, is reading about teenagers who alter their lives for love with asides suggesting self-awareness of their naivety! anyway, the themes could have overlapped in a more profound and impactful way.
if you are brave enough to endure suffering, you are brave enough to attempt happiness!!! very happily dreaming of a movie adaptation starring ATJ a lá Emma as Lucy. kthnx.
PS: major content warning for misinformation on corsetry. i know the girls are sick.

This book managed to be both beautifully written, filled with hard hitting lines, topics that will make you cry - and fun, lighthearted and full of wholesome moments that will have you giggling and kicking your feet. Lucy was an amazingly deep character, I loved reading about her difficult journey of self acceptance ; and seeing Audrey mature and realise that she can love again made me so happy.
If you think you might enjoy this book, you definitely will. Highly recommend :)
