Michael Steinberg has created a great resource and listener's guide for some of the best choral masterworks that have ever been written.
This book is a resource for academia because it provides an intricate history, musical analysis, and even opinions and lasting impact each choral masterwork has had on the evolution of music. It covers many of the big ones - Mozart, Bach, Handel, Britten, etc., as well as composers who are sometimes left in the shadows.
While I did enjoy the opinions provided by Steinberg himself, he can be a bit ruthless and stubborn when it comes to his own ideas about a piece and any information that may contradict that opinion. I did feel as if his opinion improved by overall understanding of the masterworks.
To sum it up: great resource if you are interested in choral masterworks, as a beginner or even as an expert.
