As various creatures go throughout their day, small moments of quiet (all a little different than the last) are explored.

A wonderful choice for reading aloud at bedtime.

"There are many kinds of quiet"
A book that makes you think about quiet and how it feels in the moment.

I really loved parts if this book, where Sara was speaking about her own experiences of exploring silence. I found the more academic exploration of silence, throughout history, hard to follow at times, I got lost in all of the quotes and theories and found I had started to skim read. This is simply because that kind of academic analysis is not my preferred way of learning. I would recommend but with a clear caveat, this is basically an academic book with some personal narrative.

Sara Maitland's journey toward living in solitude and silence. She feels the draw of silence, and tries out the life in stages and experiments... but also takes seriously the concerns and critiques of friends and colleagues, until landing in a remote cottage in northwest England.

About emotions connected to quiet moments.

My 16-month-old enjoyed these gentle illustrations of woodland creatures, as did I. The story was nice, too. Probably for an older reader than our usual books -- some of the "quiet" situations would require a little empathy to understand. Still, a touching little book.

DNF- so perhaps I shouldn't even write a review but this is more for myself if I look back. This book held so much promise for me. I'm trying to listen better, and listen to God better; to spend time in silence and allow myself a break from noise and talking so that I can actually hear what God wants to say. But I just found this book sooo dull, and I couldn't warm to the author. I borrowed this book, so I was even more reluctant to give up early, but there are so many books on my list that I don't want to waste time on books that give me nothing. Perhaps one day I will try again, but for now, it's a no.

There are distinctly different kinds of quiet: "best friends don't need to talk quiet" to "last one to get picked up from school quiet". This is a great discussion or writing prompt. What kinds of quiet are there? And what kinds of loud? Reminded me a bit of "One of Those Days" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Rebecca Doughty, with its list of kid-recognizable situations.

Beautiful. Understated and delightful, both in the content and the artwork... Made me smile a lot.
