I think this is pitched wrong - its beautiful illustrations and "100 books to read and re-read" tagline make you think it's going to be an indulgent coffee table book to dip in and out of.

But, really it's a collection of short essays on books (predominantly American) that the author rates. And they are not necessarily going to be everyone's tastes. Be better if this book had the views of multiple people not just one voice.

The reviews were captivating. It was sweet to enjoy them slowly over time.

“…how love…can make one more vulnerable to (not safer from) the calamities of life.”

“…before social media accelerated the sorting of people into silos of like-minded souls…”

This book told us how the writer reading journey in essay format. Honestly, it added my TBR. Yet, I'm surprised that even "Educated by Tara Westover" and Chimamanda who wrote some feminist literature are also written on the list. It's a combination between the contemporary, classics, and nonfiction. This is great book yet not a 5 star because some of you perhaps will be feeling bored when reading this book. More look like summary.

I liked this and got a few recommendations out of it but it was much more deep and philosophical than I thought it was going to be. Also, the author isn’t shy about her political leanings, and anyone who doesn’t agree with them will be extra annoyed, as they come up multiple times.

The book itself is beautiful, with thick pages, excellent artwork, and gold accents on the cover—every book lovers dream.

I gave this rather low marks, because it’s essentially a well-written list rather than a book. Now that I admit that, it sounds petty. Some of Kakutani’s descriptions of books are excellent, albeit frustratingly concise. But that’s the point: the book exists as a large unordered list rather than a reference, or other. How interesting can someone else’s reading list be?

3.5 - My favorite kind of book: a book about books. Michiko Kakutani (former chief Book critic for the NYT) highlights over 100 notable books from the last century. Definitely covered some classics I love while helping me add to my (already long) to-read list.

A few good books but is basically for an American audience. Not my cup of tea at all.
