I love that I learn as I read the books I read. Some might poo-poo the choices of genres of mysteries, paranormal, horror, science fiction, etc.....I read for enjoyment and I enjoy my genres of choice. I learn too, some more than others. Like Susan Wittig Albert's books and especially in the Darling Dahlias series. It's set during the Depression and I see how people lived, made-do, grew their gardens and straightened out the crooked.
This series is also a character study. The setting, the time, the characters inhabiting the town of Darling Alabama. There are several Darling Dahlias and each book focuses on only a few of them. This time it was Verna, who works at the probate office, Miss Rogers the librarian with a secret, Liz who works for the town's attorney...and a few others. The reader is privy to what's going on for the most part and you see characters passing each other after something has happened that you have just read. There are two mysteries going on, one is missing money and one is a coded message discovered in a pillow.
I adore this series. I can definitely recommend this book, this series and this author.

Meh. Books where the South waxes nostalgic about the civil war and the Confederate flag, etc are not my thing. 'nuff said.

Oh book. I liked so much about you but you lose a star for everyone and their hamster bemoaning how fat Angelina is. I enjoyed the other mysteries but that one was just... not a great look.

Little plot, minimal character development. Pretty awful all around.

Loses a star because the characters are far too excited and happy to be related to confederate spies. Like, I understand that they are much closer to their confederate past and that it's just a Thing in the south, but it makes me very uncomfortable.

I love the Darling Dahlias and I would probably read the series just to hear about life in small town Alabama during the Great Depression, but this book could really use a little more mystery. Although interesting, the mystery behind the local librarian's pillow just didn't do it for me. The characters and the small town of Darling carried the story, but it really needed more meat to make it a solid read.
