This is one of the worst books I have ever touched. I got it cheap from a thrift store but then after the second chapter I gave it to my friend because it was simply just aimed for people who like reading disgusting, pointless things.

A book without sense and meaning for literature.

I'm indifferent really. I didn't really find the novel to be outrageously explicit or gross, as many have found it. I actually found it a bit depressing, as it read more like a manifesto of a mentally ill person screaming for help, rather than one that was some sort of feminist sexual revolution. I honestly cannot see how this is being interpreted as a woman taking charge of herself and her sexuality. I see a teenage girl acting out because of a fucked up family life, and is desperate for love, validation, and attention. She's not doing these things out of some sense of empowerment, but as a reaction to what happened in her childhood, and quite possibly due to genetics. It's definitely worth reading, but not for those with weak stomachs.

I would hate to be Helen’s nurse.
Nasty for the sake of being nasty.

It, without question, goes out of its way to break down taboos. For some, like eating your own popped pimple pus, I'm happy withe taboo and so the book is devalued; but for others, like non-commercial tastes and preferences, the book does a great job of targeting hypocrisy. The interview with the author at the end added an extra star :)

I read it and didn't hate it, but I've never read anything which made me screw up my face in disgust so much (though I think that's the point....)
