I received a preview copy of this short story in return for offering an honest review. I've read all of the other stories in the series so far, and the author knows I say it how it is.

Firstly, it is a short story, but it's a good length - kind of cosy evening in front of the fire length, really. As with all of the stories in the White Cairns series, the stars are the instructors of the White Cairns ski school, with a specific focus on one or two characters. In this story it is Debbie who is centre-stage, as we follow the guys out for the night to celebrate Hogmanay (New Year). It turns out to be a very eventful night indeed, with a hint of romance thrown in there to tantalise. I'm looking forward to seeing where this leads.

I'm always in two minds about short stories, as they don't, in isolation, give much opportunity for character development, and I am very much a fan of character-based fiction. This does mean that with the White Cairn, the characters build over a number of different episodes / stories. I feel I'm only just getting to know them, which is down to the format and personal preference rather than the writing, which is clean and error free - always a joy with indie published work!

Only passing through on this occasion was 'Spock' aka Simon, who I think is probably my favourite character. I'm hoping to see him get a nice chunk of the action some time soon...

This is a great read, and sits just before episode 2 in the series, if you're reading in order.

I really enjoyed this short story.

I could completely relate to Debbie - the hopeless romantic longing for her Mr Right and too often finding him in books rather than in the real world.

This story is tends toward fluff, with Debbie hoping to meet her Mr Right and feeling mushy when she thinks she might have found him, but does touch on the serious issue of sexual abuse in a way that allows the reader to share in Debbie's discomfort.

Overall, this was an enjoyable story and I look forward to reading more of the series.
