For fans of the beautiful game, football can be life and death not literally of course but the highs and lows often make it feel that way. Yet, it can also have a massive impact on your mental health going to games or even watching in the pub just interacting with strangers who for 90 minutes aren't strangers at all but friends who want what you want, your team to win oh and the high you get when that happens is unbelievable.

But what about those playing the game? In an age where abuse isn't just confined to the terraces but on social media platforms and every loss and mistake is magnified picked over and repeated for the world to see, and hoards of rabid fans think nothing of using those platforms to send monkey emoji's, and tell players exactly what they think no matter the consequences.

Well Get Your Head in the Game explores this very important topic and makes you reflect and consider things that as a fan I certainly take for granted. Whilst also highlighting that whilst strides have been made sadly in part due to tragedies like the suicide of Josh Lyons there is still a long, long way to go. As many clubs didn't even want to talk to author Dominic Stevenson who himself talks openly about his struggles with mental health.

And with plenty of insightful and entertaining detail from fans and personalities a like including current Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson, former goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and the delightful crime writer and self professed football fanatic Val McDermid.

Get Your Head in the Game is an eye-opening, intelligent and valuable read. Not to mention a timely one and it's one I'd recommend even if you're not a football fan. As mental health transcends the game and we can certainly all learn something from a book like this.
