What Are You Waiting For? by Scott Menchin, Matt Phelan

Menchin tells the exact same story that Mo Willems did in WAITING IS NOT EASY, only he does it with no humor and a sleepy, soft-pitch set of illustrations. The animal characters here are a bunny and a racoon. The raccoon wants to know what the bunny is waiting for and eventually finds it's the moonrise. Neither the bunny nor the raccoon have distinct personalities either in word or in picture, and as a result the raccoon's desire line (to know what the bunny is waiting for) falls entirely flat. It's clearly trying for a Mem Fox vibe, but that was sleepy even when it was popular.

Very cute illustrations as raccoon tries to guess what rabbit is waiting for. Clues like riddles abound until the surprise arrives.

Good gimmick, and good-looking! I read it at Whole Foods.
