I found it to be a pleasant read. Sherlock Holmes but cowboys in the 1890s. I enjoyed the writing style a lot and the main character's inner voice. I haven't read the first book with these characters and that wasn't an issue at all. It read very well as a standalone novel.

I enjoy these books. Just a touch of Sherlock to make me smile and plenty of originality to keep me guessing.
Also language and innuendos sprinkled throughout but not too bad.

This was a lot of fun, just like the first. It's a classic western with all of the best elements. I felt like I was watching a movie.

The second in the Holmes on the Range series. The Amlingmeyer's hire on as railroad detectives, and come across a murder during the first part of their trip. More murder, thievery, and mayhem follow. Lots of humor. Good follow-up to first novel; enjoyed this one as well.

Really loving the Amlingmeyer brothers, their goofy adventures, and the wonderful Holmesian detecting.

I read the first in this series featuring cowboy brothers Gustav “Old Red” and Otto “Big Red” Arlingmeyer in 2011. Since then, I’ve wanted to read more about this duo whose older half idolizes Sherlock Holmes and wants to model himself after him. It’s left to Otto to chronicle their adventures. In this instalment, they are hired by the Southern Pacific Railroad as detectives on a Utah to California trip, and run up against notorious train robbers.

The voice in this series is as breezy and refreshing as I remember it, albeit containing profanity of the day, but the villain in this particular piece was a little too obvious, for not being obvious, if you know what I mean. It was still fun to follow Old Red as he trailed the clues and filled in the details.

Read this if: you’re looking for a good non-thriller mystery, especially in a 19th century western setting; or you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes (you’ll be tickled how much Old Red tries to imitate him.)

A very good sequel I enjoyed almost as much as the first book.
