It started out strong but became tired quickly with how John is completely unlikeable. I spent the entire book thinking about how Savannah can do so much better, and while she has flaws of her own she's at least a good person. John...well, if I didn't know who the author was it would be very clear that John was created by a straight man. He's a jerk who has no concept of feelings, and obvious anger management issues. How Savannah feels safe with him is beyond me. The whole book feels very white saviour wrapped up in a bow to disguise it as romantic.

I liked this when I read it a couple years ago. But would I read it again? Probably not, but that’s because romance alone isn’t my favorite genre. Was a good story & if you’re into that genre you would probably love it!

I think this is a good book. But I also think when you think of Nicholas Sparks your thinking of a romance book. This is not a romance book this is a sad book where the characters are torn apart.
Would I read it again? No probably not.
Was it a good book? Yes, but not what I would call a Nicholas Sparks book.

I also think there could of been letters they wrote Back and forth together considering the book is titled dear john I think that entails letters.

I appreciate the autism awareness thrown in and John learning to accept his dad the way he is and such. I also appreciate that being in Iraq is an experience I can never begin to imagine, but those parts Sparks wrote were so wordy. Some of his stuff he writes is just soooo wordy.

Also Savannah is a jerk.

Some of the scenes in this book had me tearing up; expected from a Nicholas Sparks novel. I was really happy to watch John mature and grow from the immature rebel that he was in his youth to the wise young man by the end of the book. I enjoyed the story of his relationship with his dad that that of Savannah tbh, it really was well put. And the effect of being in the military on him felt real. Sad, but a beautiful story.
