This book was ok.

I read it with the intention of seeking advice on training and technical background such as how Hayao Miyazaki contributes to his movies and the Ghibli studio. I was aware before reading it that the book is a compilation of his writings and interviews but I thought it would still be useful to my intention of why I'm reading the book.

The first half was pretty good as Hayao Miyazaki described in good detail about the animation process and also where he gets his inspiration from and how he likes to tells his stories but in the second half (after the drawings that were provided in the book), it became repetitive and multiple times I asked myself why I was reading very specific details that weren't important to me. I did skip through multiple chapters near in the end because my patience was running thin and I just wanted to get my first book of 2021 out of the way.

If you're looking to see into Hayao Miyazaki's technical process, I'd recommend reading the first half of the book and then look up interview videos, articles, blogs about him, etc. The second half of the book was just too bland for me to really sit down and absorb.

a deep dive into the mind of a true genius who has pushed the very limits of animation, of his own worldview, and of his lifestyle, enacting the creation of the most important, most striking, and most moving artworks in all of history.  that he is a real human being, albeit an exceptional one, is at the very least encouraging.  i hope to be inspired by the works of miyazaki-san for the rest of my life

I didn't technically finish the book in its entirety, but I read the essays I wanted to read out of it and I was happy with them! I believe that counts enough for me personally to mark this book as "finished", even if I didn't read it all.

I think it's a really interesting collection of essaya about storytelling and animation by The Guy Of Ghibli and the manga/illustrations in it were fun, especially the piece about the history of dining on airplanes.

An entertaining and inspiring collection of memoirs from the legendary, and often self-contradictory, animator.
