I really enjoyed the world-building for this one and found the plot ideas interesting. I’d love to know more about Gaia and the possibility that Earth is actually the mysterious birthplace of humans in space. There was plenty of action and adventure in this one and that kept things moving along really well. I wasn’t as caught up in the romance but the action and science fiction aspects really kept the pace up.

There were several instances of contradictory statements or plot points that bothered me. The biggest one is that Sage (Orion’s brother) accuses him of having dishonorable intentions toward Juanita and that he’s a risk to her safety. But there are quite a few instances of other Star Guardians making flirtatious comments and hitting on Juanita and Sage doesn’t seem to care about that.

My biggest problem is that Orion and Juanita come across as incredibly young and naive. We know Orion is 28, I’m not sure if Juanita’s age is ever stated but they both sound and feel more like they’re barely twenty. Juanita especially is very trusting and it’s honestly a bit surprising she’s made it this far. She’s so sweet but her naiveté makes her seem like she’s not very smart.

The other books in the series are supposed to be about the Star Guardians but I felt like this book didn’t really set them up in the best light. They’re obviously honorable men but Orion doesn’t have the best opinion on what he believes is their over-inflated reputation and prestige. Treyjon was the only one that came across as charming and interesting but not so much on the rest.

trying too hard to be quirky.

The world building was somewhat unique, but also unbelievable because of how it related to earth. Can’t say much more without spoilers. The FMC was a terrible version of the manic pixie dream girl and was obviously coded to be autistic. The MMC was annoying AF and too wrapped up in his own personal issues to be a support to what should have been a traumatized FMC, instead requiring her to provide emotional support. I can stand behind some fast burn sci fi romances, but this was ridiculous.

Spice: 2/5

Triggers: SA, abdvction, imprisonment, violence

Definitely a cute story and a fast read. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

However, I found Juanita a bit annoying and kind of stupidly risky with some of her decisions. The most annoying was her constant comparisons to the SciFi shows she watched. Luckily it was not so often that I gave up on the book.

fun

Fun intergalactic romp - but that captain really needs to pull the stick out of his you know what. Yeah, older brothers judge the younger ones, but come on. Aside from that (which I think will be it’s own story anyway) this was cute and rather charming .

DNF only made it to about 80%. The main characters were a bit weird. In my opinion there is a difference between fearless lead and just blindly ignorant. Juanita ended up being kind of blindly ignorant. Orion had the potential but all he did was complain. the leads felt like teenagers and for me that ended up just being frustrating.

I appreciate the diversity of characters, and there was a realistic amount of flirting going on considering the circumstances. Still think three-ish days is awful quick to be confessing your love to a dude, but yooo what wouldn’t I do for the chance to explore the galaxy? (I mean, there’s a lot I wouldn’t do. But I would totally tell a dude I loved him if it meant I could explore the galaxy.)

I feel like this book has a great premise and good starting points on pretty much everything. However, the whole thing felt like it needed another 6 months of writing to flesh everything out. The story needed more stakes, characters more backstory, relationships more buildup. I really just needed more... everything.

This was a lot more amusing and fun than I expected.

SpoilerThat scene where they were making out and a soldier came up with the intent to join, but was rebuffed had me cackling out loud.

Kind of overly sweet. Wasn't a huge fan of the h Juanita although there's nothing really bad about her. I just didn't connect with her geekiness. Orion was kind of young and trying to prove himself a lot. Not very smexy. IIRC, there was only one sex scene.

3.5 stars. Fun space adventure/romance. It is heavy on the romance but there is lots of action and adventure to back it up. I loved all the Stargate references from our nerdy heroine Juanita who is rather excited to find herself in another galaxy (after being rescued from slavers by the good guys of course).
