I really wanted to love this, but it isn't nearly as good as the Melendy series or Gone-Away. Glad we read it (aloud to the 8yo), though.

I sort of knew this existed, but I thought it was more of a picture book. No, this is a full-on Enright classic. It's quieter than the Melendy books, not as hilarious as the Gone-Away books, but oh, how I loved it. Mab is a delight. The book, in which nothing at all bad happens, is a pure and wonderful story. I loved it. The illustrations are classic Enright. The plot isn't exactly thin, but it's not what one could call robust. It's gentle, it's warm, and it's highly recommended. I'm going to have to get my hands on a copy of this for my own shelves.
