Beautifly written, in turns funny and heartbreaking, this book is a revelation. A testament of courage and unconditional love.

I’ve wanted to read this book for years. Not sure why I pushed it off. It is so good. Her story is inspiring; how she managed to see clearly in the chaos and not end up battling the same demons her mom and dad were fighting.

I did not know who iO was before reading this memoir, but I’m glad I do now. He is about my same age, so listening (via Hoopla, read by the author) I would match up the dates with events from my own life.

I’m impressed with how he realized he did need help to get out of his mother’s house and had the gumption to do that. I’m impressed with his honesty about figuring out and experimenting with his gender and sexuality. I was also impressed with how accepting his parents were for him “switching” genders through life. Obviously there is much to criticize about his parents too.

I went and checked out ISO’s Instagram and it looks like he’s really come into his own.

I enjoyed this but I have to admit I much preferred the ballad of billy balls podcast that the author did. That also touches on his life a bit, so it felt like a little bit of a spoiler for this book. But, overall very enjoyable and interesting.

IO is one of my favorite humans and NYC my favorite city. The way he makes me feel as though I’m walking the streets with him. The deep emotion. The grit. The story! I literally did not want to finish this book because I knew it would be over and I’d never get that first time read feeling! Thank you for this raw telling of your life.

It took me a while to get through to the end due to the triggering nature of the book. iO’s ability to talk about his past with such grace is something I don’t think I could do. I learned while reading the book that he defended Amber heard in 2016 at her defamation trial. So I think that’s the only problem I have with the author. Other than that great book
