This was just phenomenal. Reminded me a bit of Sarah Dessen for grownups, with that strong female friendship. Many tears. So sweet and real and readable.

“How could she be so proud of lapping her mother, when she had been the one to slow her down in the first place?”

“Nadia cried three times at the wedding. Once, when Aubrey walked down the aisle, smiling and clasping a bouquet of lilies, her white train trailing past like a gulf Nadia would never be able to cross.”

“She could’ve been seconds away from doing it—it didn’t matter. She hated the thought of her mother not wanting her but it would’ve been better to look at her mother’s face in the mirror and know that they were alike.”

I don’t know how to write a review for a book so beautifully written. My words are clunky and clumsy compared to hers. I’ll just say: within the first 5 pages, I didn’t care what the book was about, I wanted to read any story she wants to tell me. I got chills several times from some lines. It’s one of those books that make you pause and reread sections because they hit you in a way and you need to understand it better.
Best book I’ve read in a long time.

‘Aubrey wondered if they were the only ones who felt they didn’t know their mothers. Maybe mothers were inherently vast and unknowable.’

Things I liked about the story:
- The characters were complexed and even though some of their decisions made me mad I was still rooting for their success because of how they were written.
- The church setting and the behaviors of the pastor/pastor's wife & the "mothers" felt really realistic

Things I didn't like
- It felt like some of the story is that you can't ever move on from an abortion or your past. I like to think that even though your past impacts you, you can move on and be truly happy. It felt like Nadia was destined to never find true happiness because she had an abortion.

(as a sidenote the story kinda reminded me of Toni Morrison's Sula which is a book I loved!)
