"black people need to come to terms with the fact that some niggas like to get fucked in the ass." that sounds reductionist, perhaps even insulting, but this always come to mind when i'm describing this book to people. i think i've displaced a lot of my frustration onto this book from my more general feeling that arises from the fact that there are so few out black celebrities, to use a simple example. the reasons why are complex and i think i understand them but i think more often than not i'm just like "why can't yall just say fuck it." this would be close to what i think the book means to express. it marks the absurdity in the imitation of white notions of gender and propriety. i think it's good that the book is by a black author looking at black cultural producers and asking this question. but i think i will always associate this irritation with this book. (it doesn't help that some of his sentences are badly written.)
