I've wanted to read a Shannon K. Butcher book for a long time.

I went into this book completely blind and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. I devoured the entire book in less than a day and I was sad when I turned the last page.

Joseph and Lyka are a fantastic couple - their chemistry was lovely at the start and it just got better as time went on. Lyka did get on my nerves a tiny bit, but it wasn't enough to take away from the book. I loved Joseph, though. He was by far my favorite of the entire cast - I wish there was more from his perspective, to be honest.

I heartily enjoyed this book and I will certainly be adding more of this series to my collection.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Binding Ties
3.5 Stars

As the leader of the Theronai, Joseph Rayd places the lives and well-being of those under his care above all else. This includes Lyka Phelan, the Slayer "guest" toward whom he feels an inexplicable attraction. Determined to keep the secret that could enslave her to the Theronai, Lyka keeps a healthy distance from Joseph. But when her people are attacked, Lyka will do anything to protect them - even reveal her true identity and bind herself to the enemy.

Series note: This series has an ongoing story arc and must be read in order.

While this is a significant improvement over the previous installment, Lyka is not a particularly likable heroine and the
Spoilerrape
trope is one that I despise regardless of whether the victim is
Spoilerfemale or male
.

Readers are once again immersed in the world of the Theronai, the Slayers and the Synestren as Joseph and Lyka join forces to locate her missing packmates. Similar to some of the other heroines, Lyka is reluctant to form a bond with Joseph even though she is well aware of the consequences. Her words and actions toward Joseph are often hurtful while he is nothing but accepting and supportive. This makes it difficult to completely sympathize with her predicament and also undermines the romance to a certain extent.

The secondary storyline revolving around Ronan and Justice is interesting, and I am eager to learn about whatever force is compelling Justice to act.

All in all, I expected more from Joseph and Lyka's book, but it was a satisfying read nonetheless.

I was worried going into this one because I was so excited for Joseph's story and because I loved Torr's so much. So happy to find out I shouldn't have been worried.

This book jumps back into the normal chaos on earth and with that returns to the different story lines woven together. I don't know if I'm happy with the break we got with Torr's story or if I read this one differently, but the jumping between characters really worked well. I wasn't feeling tossed around and the overall pace of the story continued even when bouncing between stories. I loved how Butcher took the three stories of Joseph and Lyka, Ronan and Justice, and Eric to balance out the story lines while also pushing the plot further.

I also really love the addition of the Slayers. I have so many questions about them and my heart aches for Eric, but it leaves me excited for the next books and how everything will play out.

3.5/5 - a good one, sorry to see the series come to an end with the next book.

Some interesting overarching plot developments in this one. Also some truly yuck moments - poor Eric. I do wish the ending had been less abrupt.

Continues to be a series that interests me. Something about the sex that Butcher writes bothers me, though.
