Literally perfect. Snyder's magnum opus.

Three star'd because I've only ever read Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing and it's hard to match up to him. That being said, I am definitely interested in Swamp Thing and so far it's among one of the better reboots I've read in the new 52. So this one I'll definitely keep following.

Time to start the new year right, with Swamp Thing!

In this volume, the Swamp Thing Mythos is reinvented, yet again. Over all, this volume of comics is interesting if a bit dense. There's plenty of angst for our erstwhile hero and a massive threat to the world and all life on it that is noticed by other super heroes of the DC universe but who can not seem to be bothered to do anything about it. Superman kinda talks to Dr. Holland and tells him, essentially, "you should totally be Swamp Thing and achieve your destiny!" To which Dr. Holland replies, "I don't wanna, the Parliament of the Trees doesn't get me, I have all these memories of a life I never lived, it's all soooo difficult, waaaa!" Superman then shrugs his shoulders and flies off to save Lois Lane from stubbing her toe while a huge portion of the population of the Western United States is consumed by some Lovecraftian entity.

That is to say, this is an interesting and entertaining story... however, Swamp Thing and several other super heroes work best when we can pretend they don't share the Universe with other powerful beings. I mean, everyone knows something terrible is going on; Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Batman, the Flash; but the only thing that is trying to get something done about it is the Parliament of the Trees. And they suck at motivating Dr. Holland because, well, they're f*cking trees.

Dense, but exciting and somewhat horrifying, this tale works best the more you ignore that it takes place in the DC Universe.

I'm giving a graphic novel five stars..and it's Swamp thing!

Dr. Alec Holland remembers dying and becoming a monster, but he doesn't want anything to do with that life. He remembers a white haired woman but the memories of that time are vague. Even when Superman comes to see him he admits he does not want to return to that life.

Then he finds out about a "bubble boy" from hell.

The kid can animate the dead. Wicked shit right there. If you have a cancer inside you or say a bad tooth? He can make it come alive, and he wants to destroy the "Green"..little butthole.

The art is awesome.

I can't wait to read more of this series.

I enjoyed the reboot of Swamp Thing and the place it will take on the overall Green-Red-Rot mythology that DC has created in conjunction with Animal Man, a character I didn't give a second thought at all, and in fact seemed redundant to me in a universe that also has Vixen, Beast Boy, and B'wana Beast, but DC makes it work amazingly well. The antagonist is well written and the book keeps escalating to things to come. My only complain, and the reason I give this volume only 3 stars, is that it takes the whole volume for Alex Holland to accept the Swamp Thing mantle so we have to wait until volume 2 to actually see him in action.

Probably one of the weaker things I've read of Snyder's oeuvre. Still not bad, but it's hard to get over Moore's version. Also Animal Man dealt with the same kind of storyline, but it was much better with the Everyman angle.

My only disappointment was how the beginning didn't feel right having superman make a cameo. The graphic novel had a dark tone for the rest of the story. Can't wait for the next comics now.

Swamp thing is often seen as a subpar title, but I have found that there is a hidden gem in vol 1 of the new 52. I seriously am hooked and can't believe I wasn't reading this series at the beginning of the relaunch. I never thought I could feel anything for Swamp Thing but I found myself hooked pretty early on in this trade. I had an emotional involvement in the character and his choices along with what was happening to his world. 5/5 stars Highly recommend you pick it up and try reading it! It's definitely nothing like what I expected.
