This is an interesting story, and the graphic novel format is both simple and powerful. However, there were several conflicting parts of the story that needed to be explained more clearly. For example, if her family were in constant danger of being killed, why did they travel all over Europe, yet never seek asylum? I can only assume it is because of the lack of status they would have as refugees. For Marxists, they lived privileged, class-oriented lives. They kept servants, and they indulged their child with expensive, forbidden items. I can only assume it was the remnants of their upper-class status that led to Marji getting away with assaulting her principal, among other things.

the art style supports the idea of a child's perspective (fat cartoon tears, souls that look like ghosts). haunting and fragmented and powerful.
