yeah starting out this was really heading to be a five star story, but by the end it started trailing off.
the music gave me literal chills on multiple occasions, charley and eight’s dialogue in the hospital room was just amazing, c’rizz and requiem’s dynamic was scrumptious, and i kicked my feet enjoying every plottwist being thrown my way.

i do however wish excelsior was a bit more fleshed out, she was so interesting at first but after a while you realize there’s really just… nothing else to her, and suddenly we’re stuck with the most boring villain. i’m also really not a big fan of the “oh nvm it was just a silly hallucination thingy, no real consequences for anything that happened in the last two hours, oh well let’s move on!”.
also this one is a bit petty and has nothing to do with the story but what was going on with the sound? jumping back and forth between the most beautiful work i’ve ever experienced to the most low quality sound effects i’ve heard in my life.

oh well i know it looks like i have a lot of complaints but i really really liked this episode and i haven’t been this invested in a while<3

very mixed feelings about this one. on one hand, the post apocalypse felt original, and there was something chilling about excelsior's ambiguous insanity. however, story-wise parts of it felt very mid and a bit drawn out — very good for maybe a forty minute chilling standalone, like blink or listen, but not a two and a bit hour audio play. the ending also felt simultaneously overexposed and underdeveloped, and low-key like a rehashed nhof twist but without the punch. i also don't think it has some of the best performances from our main cast, and some of the narratives surrounding charley crossed the line from dystopian to ableist. in short, good story, subpar execution, on to the next one.

I didn't even realize 2 hours had passed, that's how engaged I was. The incidental characters were great, the Doctor was wonderful, and I would absolutely listen to this again. It's not as creative as other stories, and the twists are a bit muddled, but over all, it's really quite good.

The Last was a real low point in a disappointing run of audios. The idea of a crazed dictator refusing to admit the war has been lost is potentially a good one, but why on earth do her advisors not simply remove her from power (in so far as power is still a meaningful concept in such straitened circumstances)? In the real world that is what happens. In any case, it turns out not to matter, as everyone who dies comes back to life at the end of the story; essentially it was all a dream. McGann sounds really bored here, especially when addressing the shades of Katarina and Adric, and I can't blame him.

A wonderfully tense and jet black take on a post-apocalypse story. It borders on being comedic, but holds the listener right at the edge of crossing that line.
Only let down by a weak resolution to an almost impossible plot problem at the end.
