Speculative historical fiction perfected. This was a gripping read and a sobering window into the shameful past of the U.S. It was also inspirational and heart warming. I think this should be required reading.

Dana is living in 1976 California when she is transported back to antebellum Maryland to save a young white boy from drowning. After being transported back to her time, she determines that the young boy is one of her ancestors (Rufus Weylin) and that any time he fears that he will die, she will be sent back to his time to save him. Dana faces almost insurmountable challenges as she guides Rufus, lives through the horrors of slavery, and attempts to return home.

Kindred is a gripping tale that depicts life during slavery. While there are scenes of awful brutality...it is not as violent as many stories of this time could be. Dana's first-hand account of the experiences provides commentary about the cruelty taking place to her and around her. Because of that, it could be used for high school students to learn about slavery and its legacy in the United States.
