It was super quick read that was fun but not life changing. The characters were neat, though sometimes a little flat. I still don't know what any of them desire, and the supporting cast is built of people who are all pretty static. Katie definitely changes, which is great and not super contrived, but I wish the other characters did as well.
lighthearted

Spin by Catherine McKenzie is a fun, fast-paced novel about Kate, a flawed aspiring journalist who lands in rehab to spy on a celebrity for a tabloid. McKenzie’s sharp, witty writing and Kate’s snarky voice make it an engaging read, with a solid cast of supporting characters like Amber, the troubled starlet. The rehab setting and light romance add charm, but the story can feel shallow, with a too-tidy resolution and repetitive inner monologues. Perfect for fans of light women’s fiction like Sophie Kinsella, it’s a breezy escape but not deeply memorable.

I absolutely enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down.

Kate Sandford is an aspiring music journalist mostly working the freelance indie music review scene when she spots the chance of a lifetime: her all-time favourite magazine, The Line, has a spot open on its staff. Overjoyed, she applies immediately. She receives a call for an interview, scheduled on the morning of her thirtieth birthday. Her friends invite her out for a drink to celebrate the interview and her birthday, and one thing leads to another...
The next morning, everything goes wrong and Kate has no choice but to show up to the interview, still drunk, and give it her best shot. She fails spectacularly. The woman who scheduled her interview tells her to go home as she's puking in the bathroom.
Weeks later, in the middle of a depressive downward spiral, she receives a call from The Line asking her to come in again. She agrees immediately. When she shows up, however, she finds out the assignment is, in fact, for The Line's sister publication, a gossip tabloid. Their idea is to have Kate follow a starlet undercover into rehab and get the inside scoop on her life in exchange for another shot at her dream job. Of course, Kate accepts--what's Hollywood's latest young thing's privacy in comparison to her happily ever after?
Because the rehab centre can't know Kate is undercover, she must, too, participate in all the daily activities as if she had checked in herself. Increasingly uncomfortable with how close to home all the rehab work is hitting her, Kate and the young starlet meet and forge a friendship. The closer Kate gets to the starlet, however, the harder the end game is starting to seem.

With smooth, enjoyable writing and vulnerable characters, Catherine McKenzie's Spin is really very entertaining and a fairly unbiased look at addiction and avoiding oneself to survive. I'll be seeking out her other work for sure.

"Spin" was a fast, fun, and even thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and stayed up way too late to finish it.

Really fun and engaging read! Never a dull moment, with great and witty characters :)

Full review to come.

Loved it! Great characters and fun to read. Nothing literarily magnificent but entertaining and heart warming.

Aaaawesome. Loved this book. Very real characters. Loved the playlist at the end! (I thought it'd be cool to re-read and listen to the songs on the playlist at each chapter they were present, but I'm a slower reader and figured I'd have to listen on repeat for too long!).
As far as chic-lit goes, I have def found my fave author. The characters are realistic and the dialogue is great (Curse words!!! Thank you!!).

Happy (though typical) girl-gets-the-guy ending, but the whole story is so great that you can't put it down!

I liked this a lot more than I expected to based on it's genre! A good quick read with a likeable (albeit fallible) heroine.

I was torn between 3 stars and 4 - settled on 3 because of the ending - I had so hoped for a different ending.

Overall a pretty good book (until the end).

Great easy book to read when you want to escape the realities of life. Perfect beach read.
