Rodney King verdict. In this story a young black woman is shot and killed by a Korean woman after an altercation at a convenience store. The Korean woman gets off and starts her life over in another part of LA. About 20 years later the Korean woman is shot where she works and the past is brought up. Her daughter, Grace, is trying to piece together what happened 20 years ago and what is going on currently.
I liked this historical fiction novel because it talks about events that happened while I was alive, but which I didn't know the specifics about. I thought that the author did a good job at representing both sides of the story. I would have liked to read more about the incidents happening in the 90s. I don't think this book is supposed to be YA, but it read very much YA to me and I would have appreciated a more grown-up version of this story. The book also takes place in Northridge, which was fun to read about because I used to live there.

Slow, disengaged with the writing; felt forced and cringe in places. Couldn't connect with the characters.

A compelling, engrossing look at racial tensions and their lasting impacts, affecting generations. All of the characters felt real, and the book challenged me as it did because I could see where each of them were coming from, which made it hard to decide what a satisfying resolution might look like. This is a timely book that would have been timely twenty years ago too--and that's sad to say. The U.S. has so much reckoning to do with its long, gruesome history of racial inequality. I only hope I'll live to see the day that my country finally does begin this reckoning.
