A Page Turner!

I couldn’t stop reading – I had to find out the truth. I’m very happy to have discovered this book, and this author. I loved all the main characters, and thought Alison Gaylin did an amazing job of writing adult and teen characters who were all relatable and well-developed. The mystery was well-paced, kept the tension high, and held my interest. I also liked that there were other surprising reveals along the way, some that related to the main crime, and others that didn’t. All the storylines were handled competently and wrapped up nicely, and this novel dealt with a wide range of issues that affect adults and teens alike – single parenting, past trauma, grief, teen bullying, isolation and social ostracization, and how easily the spread of social media can ruin lives. A top read!

I received this as an ARC from the publisher for an honest review.

I really love when I think I know where a book is going and I'm completely wrong. This is one of those books. I couldn't put this one down. There a few things that had me scratching my head, but they weren't major things and I can't mention them without spoiling a little bit, so I'll refrain. But this was definitely an enjoyable read and I recommend it.

„By the time you read this, I’ll be dead. “
Jackie is doing her best to raise two teenage sons on her own. Connor is in the midst of puberty, and Wade always seems so sad but isn’t it kind of normal that teenagers are kind of distant to their mother?

Then one of her son’s classmates is killed in a hit and run accident, she can’t tell where Wade is and Connor keeps giving vague answers.

Aimee knows she isn’t a reliable witness but she swears she’s telling the truth: One boy stole her car; another one helped her, then tried to stop the other, who then hit him and drove off.

Wade is despised by pretty much everyone in school, while he bullies them on social media, including Liam, the teenager who got hit by the car. Even his brother starts suspecting him. He’s clearly keeping secrets and soon Connor needs to keep them too, feeling bad about lying to his mother.

Soon everyone in town is talking about what happened and most of them turn their eyes on one of Jackie’s boys, while Social Media explodes with theories and threats. It’s clear that this accident will change the lives of many people but she just wants to save her son.

I was quickly pulled into this twisted story full of secrets and lies. The atmosphere was so tense and even though there are so many little storylines colliding, it felt like kind of a slow burner – but not in a bad way.

I loved how social media was used in addition to the multiple POVs and tension and suspense increased every time the POV changed again.
It kept me guessing through the whole thing and every time I thought I had it all figured out, something I never saw coming came up.
I just would have loved a little more detail to some of the characters but all of them were perfectly realistic and drew me to their perception of events.
