I read this book because the premise intrigued me after hearing about the prospective movie adaptation and that it would be directed by Bong Joon-ho. I liked reading this book! It's not super plot heavy, there's a lot of exposition, "history", and philosophical conversations and musings which play an important role for Mickey's story. I'd read more about Mickey's life given the chance. :)

I wish we knew more about what Mickey7 said to the "creepers" during their conversation, like what they said word-for-word vs just what Mickey said they talked about. I don't really find what he told Marshall to be 100% reliable (considering he lied about it) but I guess we can take what he said about them at his word... I would also like to know if they make it in the future...chicokc's review against another edition

En esta novela exploraremos ese planeta y sus problemas, y claro, los dilemas éticos que conlleva el ser y no ser la persona que se enroló por primera vez.

Moderate: Eating disorder
A big part of this book is that the colony is basically in a famine, so they're on an extreme calorie restriction. It's not an eating disorder exactly, but it means there's a lot of talk about calories and hunger and restricting food that could potentially be triggering.sheldon1979's review against another edition

Mickey Barnes has a huge debt he owes to a bookmaker on Midgard and he needs a way off the planet and the only way is on the spaceship that his friend Berto is assigned to and the only problem is that there is only one vacancy left and no one ever volunteers for that role until Mickey did.
He signed up to be an expandable on a new colony on a different planet and his job is to be the person who does dangerous jobs where it could kill him and has done so six times already. And then Mickey7 falls down a hole and his friend assumes he will die and recreates him as Mickey8, problem is he didn't die and there is now two versions of Mickey exist which is a problem.

This is a sub-genre where you have to set aside your critical lens and just enjoy it.
The copying concept is implausible, but Ashton's handwaving explanation meets the requirement of "I know, but what if anyway?"
I like the idea of the Natalists, because without them we will indeed end up with a ship full of Mickeys, as Ashton recognizes in describing other missions.
Problems? Maybe a bit too much of the flashback style. Attitudes of crew members? Believable in the setting Ashton presents, where many lifeships don't make it. And Marshall is a bit of a quantum character, flipping between radical and sensible by the half-minute.
But I enjoyed it and will look for #2.

Pretty cool book! I like the sarcasm of the main character and the way capitalism works out after cloning was invented. The way the female characters kept falling for the guy seemed a bit wishful thinking on the authors part, a lot of the 'romantic' stuff was superfluous at best. The nature of the aliens wasn't very novel, but overall I really enjoyed the tone of the book and would consider trading more by this autour.
