Writing: solid translation job | Plot: woah nelly! | Ending: brooOOOOOOOOO?????

SYNOPSIS

In order to get the answers he desperately seeks about his son's disappearance, Till Berkhoff gets smuggled into the psychiatric prison hospital where the assumed kidnapper is being held.

MY OPINION

YOOOOOOOO???? What a wild ass ride. This is what I imagine Freida McFadden believes she's writing, but instead she serves up Great Value caricatures and lacklustre storytelling. Anyways, let me focus on THIS book. I docked a star because the twist will instantly remind you of a very famous thriller and the plot went a lil TOO over the line for me, but I have to give major props to Sebastian Fitzek for getting my ass caught up in all the drama.

This is def a DARK thriller. There is a lot of gore and graphic scenes in this book, just FYI. I'm squeamish so I did find myself 'flipping' the pages. Idk how Till was still standing at the end of it all... or was he? DUN DUN DUN.

Anyways, I appreciated that Fitzek got this story poppin from the beginning. Chapter one already had me locked tf in. This was like several Criminal Minds episodes strung together. It's fast paced, totally bingeable. I stay rockin with European authors because they always GO THERE, and I feel like if you're gonna be OTT then you might as well slang your balls to the walls and get grimy with it. Don't just give me rich people faffing about or illogical therapist stalking clients so she can overcharge—let me inside the mind of a truly disturbed psychopath and show me why his brain is crumpin to a different tune.

Fitzek does a great job raising the stakes with every chapter. You truly feel a sense of urgency for Till and his lil mission. But what I liked best was how it all came together (or rather, apart) near the end. Although it wasn't 100% original, I was certainly NOT expecting it. I won't lie, my jaw literally dropped and I scream WTF in my husband's face at point-blank range.

I REPEAT: yeetage of disbelief is required. I wasn't a fan of the reveals around Max's kidnapping, the male-gazey lawyer stuff, and I didn't think the whole prison prostitution ring storyline was necessary but it didn't hold me back from gobblin this up, no crumbs. I would LOVE to see this made into a movie or TV show. Tons of entertainment value. I'll definitely be checking out more from this author.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: translation was solid, very entertaining, fast-paced, twist had me SHOOKETH (wasn't expecting it to go in that direction), emotions were felt, right amount of dark humour

Cons: although I was surprised by the twist, it isn't exactly original... I know this doesn't make sense but if you read it, you might understand? the plot was a lil too far-fetched and over-stuffed to be a complete banger
