BASKERVILLES
I absolutely devoured this one. There's something about having consumed a lot of adaptations of this story before reading the original text and I have to say the original manages to beat out every other iteration (so far) of Baskervilles for me.
Loved Watson having his own adventure writing to Holmes and trying to solve it by himself while Holmes was secretly on the moor watching the whole thing go down.
I'm just such a huge Watson fan and this was such a Watson Story that there was literally no conceivable way that I wouldn't love it. And I do. The twists felt very well-earned and there's some wonderful lines that I just had to tab out/underline in my copy. Quintessential Holmes.

VALLEY OF FEAR
I'll admit: this one kind of got to me. Like. Part one was very good, very classic Holmes, and I liked the characters of MacDonald and White Mason - these two professional police officers interacting with Holmes who is so far above their level and the way they aren't ashamed or embarrasse to acknowledge that Holmes is far superior than they are was really really nice to read.
And then Part two. God. Part two was such a drag for me because once they'd solved it I genuinely got lost in the backstory sauce with no attachment to any of the characters to propel me through to the end, and so it has been a frankly grueling few days of trying to wade through this particular story. Up until like the last two or three chapters, which I just devoured in an hour and a half when I realized the direction that the story was taking and the twist was VERY twisty, like it seems kind of obvious in hindsight but I don't claim to be Holmes and so I feel like I should be forgiven for not noticing the ending coming at me. Anyway. I ended up liking it more than I thought I did, perhaps the ending was a shade too abrupt for me; you could definitely feel ACD desperate to put his pen down at that point, but overall not as bad as it seemed it would be for a good minute there.

I adore Sherlock Holmes and this book contains my favourite Holmes story (Hound of the Baskervilles). It is a brilliantly written, descriptive tale that perfectly combines the supernatural tones with the analytical thinking of Holmes.

The Valley of Fear was new to me but I still enjoyed it. I did actually say out loud at one point "really, Conan Doyle? ANOTHER secret society?" He tends to use this a lot in his stories. I quite enjoy the split in his novels when he leaves Holmes entirely and describes the backstory but I know it isn't to everyone's taste. All in all, a brilliant book. Lost a star as not as good as just Hound on it's own.
