a lot more readable than teen titans: raven that's for sure. i did appreciate the lighter tones this book had i felt like it went with his character more. the art is gorgeous.

My mindset going into this book: Hey, this Beast Boy can't be any worse than the Young Justice version. And, yay, I was right. He was much better in this book, dealing with issues without losing his personality and humor. So I give it a 2.5? Better than Raven in most ways; better story, characters, paneling, and it felt more realistic high school-wise. Raven had more interesting coloring though.

Alright, now this is a pleasant change. I’ll be the first to admit Beast Boy was probably always my least favorite Titan, I always seemed to prefer the characters with darker backstories, but even I recognized how integral he was to the original team in balancing out those darker characters with his light and humor.

This story suited Gar Logan/Beast Boy perfectly, and not only because it lined up with his original backstory far better than Raven’s. It’s not your typical action-packed superhero story. Just a happy-go-lucky kid going about his life in everyday high school, trying to get the popular kids to like him and worrying about his lack of growth compared to the other boys his age. This felt authentic to how the character is usually presented, and though it’s not a character I particularly resonate with, I appreciated it. He’s far too fame-obsessed and consumed with getting the hot girl at school to like him, even if he himself has no genuine interest in her other than her hotness and popularity, and while I don’t particularly like that, I respect that it’s not only authentic to the OG character but also something that’s still relevant to a lot of kids still in school. His growth out of that obsession is also something that’s good for kids to read about.

I’m really looking forward to continuing these books. The next one has Raven and Beast Boy meeting, and then the Robins follow. I really hope we continue the upward trend!
