I sped through this book because the action is non-stop. There is loads going on and you feel invested in the characters. This fantasy book is fabulous and really took fantasy to a new level, it reminded me slightly of The Girl from Everywhere but with a different plot and a range of characters from different backgrounds and classes. The class divide was obvious and realistic, if a little unsettling. I really cared for the characters too, I almost felt like I knew them personally.
The myths and stories within this book gives it a sense of realism and I found that this made this book steeped in tradition and wow. A must read!

“We are all of us products of our surroundings. Each of us carries the map of our lives on our skin, in the way we walk, even in the way we grow.”

This was a quick, sweet read about a 13-year-old girl, Isabella, discovering the dangers of her island. She is brought along on a search party with the Governor to find his daughter, who is also her best friend. As she travels through the prohibited part of the island, she realises her favourite bedtime story was not just a story, there truly is evil. This book is a combination of bravery, sacrifice, adventure and friendship.
Isabella was an amazing character. She led the search party using her cartography skills and her navigation of the stars, while also sketching new maps of the unknown parts of the island. She was brave and smart, she fought back against the aggressive wolf-like creatures with no hesitation.
I really enjoyed this book, the chapters were a perfect length, and everything flowed nicely. I loved Isabella and Lupes' friendship and how far they would go for each other. The only thing I couldn't understand was who was Yote? I didn’t feel like there was much explanation for him, and he wasn’t around for very long either. If the book had been a little longer, I think there would’ve been more explanation.
+ Where did Miss La go? (I loved that chicken)

This is a good fantasy middle grade book. I don’t read much middle grade anymore, but I needed one for a challenge and the cover of this one jumped out at me. It did seem a like the pacing was off a little bit, but I don’t know that the intended audience would notice. The action keeps the story moving along, and the main character is lovable and spunky. If you’ve got a middle grade reader, I would definitely recommend, especially if they like fantasy.
