Not a bad book, just not exactly my type. Mixed feelings. Bought it simply cuz I liked the cover, weird book, but good, fun, and I enjoyed the ending. It was fun how the chapters were formatted as the days of the month. I do not regret buying it.

3,5 Stars; 4 Stars for masterful writing, 3 stars for enjoyment

This book is a fun nugget that I would recommend to anyone who hasn't read it. It has a chapter for each day in October which is how I read it up until this weekend, because I did not know if I had time for the relatively large last chapter during the Weekdays. So basically, I'm recommending this for next year ;)

The story is written from the perspective of Snuff the dog of Jack and revolves around a mystical game that is played by all kinds of figures from folklore, literature and urban legends. Each humanoid player has an animal companion and both fulfill roles in preparing the game that takes place at the end of October. Only when Hallow's Eve coincides with the full moon does this game take place.

The book provides us with the nice puzzle of what the game is, who the players are, on which sides they are and it actually challenges us to consider which events are related to the game and which are secondary. Alliances and information are shared between players and animals but even that is always a game of information, misinformation and omissions.

All in all, an entertaining side read in the month of October, which has great references, witty dialogue and interesting characters. I found the ending slightly underwhelming, but even there, I found some nice plot twists and everything came together quite satisfactorily.

Bummed that I didn't enjoy this... I should have, given what it is about. It was too repetitive for me. In almost every chapter, the characters were conniving and conspiring and looking to solve a mystery that, by the end, I lost interest in.

I liked this book... but not as much as I could have. I guess I just don't have the necessary reading background to understand a lot of the allusions within it. Unless it was pointed out to me, I didn't get it. But it was still a cute and fun Halloween read, worthy of at least three stars.

It took me a long time to get around to reading this book, and I don't know why. I loved it. It is a great blend of wit, horror, and mystery, with a dash of magic thrown in for spice. I don't like reviews that give things away, so I won't get too specific, but I loved seeing some of my old favorite mystery and horror characters brought to life in a fun way. My favorite novel of all time narrated by a dog.

Massively enjoyed this. Like Warrior Cats if Warrior Cats was written by Bram Stoker.
