This story is really being told in the most boring way possible isn’t it?

*A major rant, read at your own discretion. There are also some spoilers here.*

This issue was such a jumbled mess. I’m not going to hold back so, prepare for a long review.

Thoughts after reading this issue:
- The non-chronological order is very confusing.
Amethyst’s exclusive flashbacks actually explain stuff so i guess it’s kind of ok. But that means the timeline for this issue goes like this:
- Today, half the team in the pit
- Yesterday, Amethyst and gem family politics
- Today, Conner and Bart elsewhere
- Today, half of the team in the pit
- Today, everyone unites
- Earlier, Amethyst meets Robin for the first time (something that chronologically happened during [b:issue #2|43715311|Young Justice (2019-) #2|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1548548675l/43715311._SY75_.jpg|68029185])
...
All this back and forth is confusing!! Not only is their back and forth in time but there’s also back and forth in location.

- Why are we going backwards??? WHAT SENSE DOES THAT MAKE?? Amethyst and Robin’s meeting was completely skipped and I complained about that in issue #2 but what sense does it make to add it on now??? Why didn’t [a:Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg] add it in [b:issue #2|43715311|Young Justice (2019-) #2|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1548548675l/43715311._SY75_.jpg|68029185]?

- There were so MANY questions posed. In fact, I counted them! 74 questions. 74!! And only around 20 of them were necessary for dramatic effect or advancing the plot. So many of the questions being asked HAD ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED.
[b:Last issue|43722560|Young Justice (2019-) #3|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1552088400l/43722560._SY75_.jpg|68044310] we established that half the team were being held in the dark Lord Opal’s pits. Amethyst said it herself:

She even repeated it at the beginning of this issue; reiterating how the dark Lord Opal was holding them all in pits:

So why are all the team still acting confused about where they are???

Oh, and this one is my favourite:

What? WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHO WAS IT THAT TRAPPED YOU DOWN HERE???????? Did you just fall asleep during this entrance in [b:issue #2|43715311|Young Justice (2019-) #2|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1548548675l/43715311._SY75_.jpg|68029185]?

Now, the question of why he attacked you is a good one. So naturally, in true [a:Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg]’ Young Justice style, it doesn’t. Get. Answered.
We were so close! Conner was about to explain:

But, no, the answer couldn’t come too soon!! [a:Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg] needs to spread it out over 2 or 3 more issues! He can’t be straightforward with this, why would he do that?!?!?!
So we get this pathetic excuse of an answer instead:

What do you mean “this is not what you think it is”? I don’t think it’s anything!! I don’t know what’s going on! BECAUSE. YOU. WON’T SAY. Instead of explaining, this comic has just done the equivalent of saying “oh, it’s too confusing you wouldn’t get it” without even trying to explain it.

I hated pretty much everything in this issue (can you tell??) but I liked 2 things:
- Bart is always amazing:

- And this cute little snippet:

I have 2 theories as to why [a:Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg]’ Young Justice sucks:
1. There are too many characters on the team.

Teen Lantern says maybe 3 sentences every issue. No joke. The team is so oversaturated that there aren’t enough pages to allow everyone to have an equal or fair amount to say. Why is that a problem? Because then it leads to characters repeating each other (asking the same or similar questions again or asking something that’s already been answered) or some characters end up with no personality or exploration. We are 4 issues in. We are only now beginning to understand who Amethyst is and a little bit about Jinny Hex too. No idea who Teen Lantern is still. She legit doesn’t even have an actual name yet.

2. [a:Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg] is prolonging this on purpose.
The plot is small. What do you do with a small plot? You fill it up with flashbacks, unnecessary scenes, conversations that are repetitive, characters that ask the same questions again and again, characters that don’t add anything to the team (yes, I’m talking about you Teen Lantern), and most of all stretch out what little answers you have. [a:Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg] has made a sweet little money machine here. That might sound cynical but think about it: the more the plot is dragged out, the more issues there will be in this arc. The more issues in the arc, the more you’re going to pay overall. It’s become infuriatingly obvious to me and it’s so sad how the comic is suffering because of it.

I’m not even going to sugarcoat it anymore. This is rubbish. Maybe it would be ok if a bad issue was a one off. But it's not. It's a complete mess and I am so done with how bad it is that I am actually enjoying tearing it apart (in the review not literally). Wouldn’t recommend to anyone at all. Extremely disappointed considering that I like Young Justice as a concept and the TV show. I also like some of Bendis' comics too so this isn't some kind of personal hatred I have towards him. Man, I’m just waiting for this arc to finish and then I am done with the wasted potential that has been Young Justice.

Between that hug and the way that Conner looked at Tim I'm dead.
