This was a wonderful book that really made me stop and think as I was reading it! The ending wasn't at all what I expected though... perhaps it was left that way on purpose?? Maybe we can hope for a 3rd book - as this one sort of tied in with Deep End of the Ocean... loosely!

I read Mitchard's The Deep End of the Ocean and liked it, but since then it's been downhill for me with this author. The basic premise of her stories are intriguing but I find her writing very uneven -- are her editors afraid to do what needs to be done to tighten flabby writing, to fix chronology that makes no sense, and to eliminate characters who take up space but have no purpose?

My biggest problem is with her characters, mostly the women (her male characters seem one-dimensional to me). They deal with every situation emotionally, and seem fraught with feelings that I just flat-out don't understand, especially as decision-making tools.

A lot of people love Mitchard; guess she's just not my cup of tea ...

I won this book as a Goodreads First Reads Win. Jacquelyn Mitchard captured my attention right away with Second Nature. It tells the story of Sicily, who was burned in a fire as a child. The fire severly damaged her face. Years later, she is given an opportunity to change her life by getting a face transplant. The story has multiple twists and turns that left me wanting more. I didn't want to put the book down and stayed up until 1:30 in the morning to finish the book. I am dying to go get her other books now.
