Fast paced. Short chapters. Wanted to keep reading. Thought I knew what was going to happen, but I had heard Lucinda Berry's books had shocking twists so I assumed I'd be wrong and started trying to figure out a different ending. It ended like I originally predicted. I liked Casey as the autistic specialist and Genevieve was the perfect manipulative bitch. Appalling idea that a mother could do this to her child.

Well this book was surely something. Honestly I have to say for this being my first book by this author I’m a lot less impressed than expected. I thought the concept was top tier and I was super excited.
Other than feeling like the writing was super wooden and juvenile, with a gross lack of description…. I just was also a little grossed out at the representation of autism.
I have an autistic daughter and I thought this might be good given the authors background in psychology focusing on children. But it really did read like she read a wiki article on autism and just summarized it all into one character. Which I find incredibly disheartening and offensive. I’m not gonna let myself get mad and rant too much…. But yeah. This did not feel like an educated person wrote this book.
That aside the writing felt on par with middle grade and I predicted literally everything well before the 50% mark. I might let that slide if not for the twists simply not being good. It’s like she didn’t even try to challenge the reader.
I know some people say her books are meant to say something as well rather than just be twisty…. But I did not get that from this.
Also I’m never fond of mustache twirly cliche villains and this definitely has that.
I’m going to stop now because I truly don’t have anything good to say.
That being said what should I read next by her? I’ve heard this isn’t her best work so I’m willing to give it another go!
