"You don't have to take my voice...Just teach me how to use it."

A Song Below Water is such a creative fantasy novel, and I enjoyed reading it! I was a little confused by the story at first, but I got it sorted out. I liked Tavia and Effie's friendship a lot, and I would love to read more books in this universe if it becomes a series.

CW - racism, mention of suicide

I love love love Tavia and Effy's relationship. They are the cutest, most supportive friends ever. I also enjoyed the way Morrow tackled social issues. Despite the magic element, it felt very real to what we see today in real life.

I've discovered that there is a range of YA, and this boom definitely falls on the younger side of that continuum. That said, the book is well written, and gives the BLM movement a twist of Greek mythology as another way to highlight both the danger POC are in and the power they have when they use their voices.

I was a bit confused at time. I feel like as we got more into the book it was a bit more clear. I loved the social commentary and the descriptions of the injustice in Siren life and black lives and how it perfectly showed what is actually happening in the real world.

3.5 stars for this charming YA novel set in an alternate version of Portland, OR where over-protective parents and MAGICAL POWERS complicate the lives of two Black teen girls. Not gonna lie, I sort of want to live in this world.(Except I could do without all the angst!)
