I was really excited by the premise, and it was a recommendation shelf at the library. Sci-fi / horror not written by a middle age white man? Yes please! However, until page 400, I didn't fell much for the characters or the story. I felt it was just going through the motion, not bringing anything new or exciting to me. Then there are these couple of brilliant pages and the story ends in a way that I didn't find satisfying.

Very slow pacing, not enough context/lore to understand what’s going on

Cosmic horror with a YA feel as two young friends, one a wealthy child prodigy, the other a close friend who works in a supermarket stock room, discover that the prodigy's new miracle power source opens holes into other dimensions where ancient godlike beings sleep, waking them and drawing their attention. There's a fair bit of angst in this as Nick ponders his friendship with Johnny, their relative status in terms of race, wealth and class, but there's secrets and betrayals ahead as they race across the world to stop the gods returning. It's well written, mostly fast-paced - some of the angsting drags things down a bit, and the central relationship is well-realised.

This book was good and I thought it was interesting the way the story moved. Slowly at first and the. Fast like we were running out of time. I like how firmly this is his story. This caught me at the bad time of school becoming more intense and the plague and things are hard? I did enjoy this story telling and I think the monsters and shape of the story is innovative. The characters felt real especially because of their flaws.
