This is exactly my kind of urban fantasy bs with redicilous powers, monsters both good and evil, and demonic possession. Cliche heroine is as cliche heroine does but hey, it's a cliche for a reason and it works. Really well written supporting characters with villains you wanted dead.

This was boring to me. I made it to about 34% and then I couldn't keep going. I didn't care enough about what was happening to push through and get to a better part. Other people loved this so I might try the other Chronicles set as this appears to be set in the same world. This just didn't do it for me.

I wasn't ready to love this book as much as I did. I was nervous because I loved the Hellequin Chronicles so much that I didn't think I could handle a different story line, but this fits right into the storyline! Involves the characters you fall in love with from the Hellequin books, and has new faces that just ties everything together perfectly. Chloe is a badass! The end to this book was perfect! I'm sure if you come across this not having read the Hellequin Chronicles that you would still enjoy this!
I really encourage you to read them though (all 7).

(Can you tell I'm not really great at doing reviews? This was more of a ramble

REALLY LIKED this book. It gave me the same vibes as the start of the Hellequin series. Layla and Co. are a set of amazing characters, mixing those we've already met in the previous series with new friends.

In this novel, Layla Cassidy is a not-so-regular college student who is secretly the daughter of a serial killer. When she is inadvertently located by a redcap and his team looking for her father to help start an army of magically powered humans, Layla finds herself caught up in a new world. She is captured, but in escaped comes into power as an accidental Umbra. Her powers are met with the challenges of acceptance and survival.

A fun ride with some of my favorite characters from the Hellequin series. Ready to move right on into the next in the series.

This arc has a lot of things going for it. It’s got a strong main character and starts off strong. There’s a villain POV and he’s a redcap. I liked how there were more monsters of fantasy in an urban setting, like redcaps and trolls.

Also the idea of a soul scroll was interesting.

But this book dragged after the halfway point. This book is set in a previously established world, and fans of the other series will like this addition to it. I’d recommend if you are in the mood for no romance urban fantasy.

Kinda fun

I love fantasy and this one was really good but I felt it went really fast at some points and threw some characters at you. However super good!

Great Story!

I received their book from Amazon Prime First Reads. I finally decided after a few months to read it. The cover was very captivating as was the book summary. I was definitely not disappointed. Steve McHugh's work definitely reads very easily. I enjoyed all the characters. I was a little worried the book would be too violent for myself, but found it was a good balance throughout. I cannot wait to read book two!
