Remember seeing an interview about how she was a pianist and they made her sing. Interesting to hear more of her history. Definitely geared towards children. Still enjoyable

This biography was lovely. I had no idea how interesting Nina Simone was until picking up this book. There's so much to say about her and not enough words.

Fantastic biography of Nina Simone highlighting her parents' love, joy, and accomplishments as well as the racism Nina encountered when pursuing her music. Mentions murder of Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King, the Birmingham church bombing, the bus boycott, and lunch counter sit-ins to put her music and activism in the context of the "low rumble of anger and fear--the sound of Black people rising, rising, unwilling to accept being treated as less than human." I love the spread where Nina (Eunice at that time) waits to play her concert for an assembled crowd until her parents are reseated in the front row after being displaced by white people.
Full of Black joy and resistance, the books ends "her voice sounded like hope."

This is a book for mama. Maybe someday the kid will appreciate but for now—she’s mine.

Christian Robinson’s art is beautiful and so unique,

I love that Nina Simone gets a picture book! She isn’t a traditional subject for a children’s book but she is a deserved one.

A great picture book biography! I had no idea who Nina Simone was and this was a great introduction. It also gave me a chance to have a conversation with my three year old (on a very three year old level) about racism.
