This book was very mid. And I can't tell if it was just too YA for me or if it was actually just very mid. I have to be honest, I couldn't stand the main character. The way she put herself as the victim in EVERY situation was frustrating and eye roll-inducing. She doesn't treat the people around her well and is then surprised to receive backlash. The pacing also felt strange in places, some parts that I thought could be interesting were skipped over quickly while others were drawn out that were boring and didn't really advance the plot in any way significant. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to like this book a lot. I think it is a fun idea and I really wanted to see the MC come out (ha!) on top. But the whole thing fell a little flat to me apart from some key moments that I did think showed importance and significance and were trying to tell something meaningful. Unfortunately for me they got lost in the book.

Ok I’ll preface this review with the fact that it says it’s a teen book & it’s absolutely a teen book. It’s simply written & predictable in all the ways you expect. But it was a super cute, super fun little story about high schoolers falling in love & dealing with life & I really enjoyed it!

A decent queer coming of age story. Perhaps a bit simple, but that's alright for YA.

I /did/ like this book, and I do think it’s good. There were just a lot of stuff that weren’t great. For example, I felt like the romance was plain, or like it was a bit underdeveloped. Maybe I just don’t get it, in that case I’m sorry, but why are the characters like /in love/ when they’ve been dating for like two weeks?
Something I really appreciated was that we actually got to see Mahalia (the mc) have a friend, not just get told that she has one, and then never explore that character, as if they’re nothing more than a plot device. But I just didn’t love the ending when it comes to Mahalia and Naomi’s friendship-ark. I just don’t se how the roots of their problems were fixed or worked on after they made up.
However I did really enjoy how Mahalia and her mother’s relationship developed during the plot, I have no complaints there.

Altos, fukk Dany.
