One summer when I was 12 or 13, before SmartPhones, before The Internet was ubiquitous, before TiVo, I was bored. At home.

This is how I found myself picking up the works of William Shakespeare (a two volume set) and opening it up to the first play: Titus Adronicus. "I should read Shakespeare, I thought to myself." And so I began. I read the introduction so I understood it is only arguably considered authored by Shakespeare, so in my mind he gets a pass on this play. Although it wouldn't really surprise me if he did write it as Titus Adronicus is a revenge play and those were all the rage back in the day.

That being said, unless you are a completionist this is absolutely one of the plays to skip. If you do read it anyway know that it's not just a tragedy, it's a bloodbath. Rape, honor killings, cannibalism, etc. Because the only thing worse for a girl than a fate worse than death is your family killing you for shame. Lovely.

I know it's not exactly a five star text, but that movie (with Anthony Hopkins) really made it so enjoyable.

Yes, I can judge plays via movies. They're PLAYS.

I'm seriously impressed that I not only finished reading a Shakespeare play but that I also really enjoyed all the drama that was going on. I don't know what I expected from a play that was described to me as a revenge tragedy but it definitely was that. A lot of revenge and a lot of tragedy. Nice.
