The hunger games trilogy was overall a solid and compelling trilogy of books. Katniss, starring as our lovable anti hero, is instantly a compelling character, softened and complimented by the more emotionally intelligent Peeta. The building of their character arcs and relationship is what drives the later novels and creates tension in the first one.
The first hunger games book is the strongest entry to the series with excellent pacing, nonstop action, and heavy emotion. It’s an almost perfect dystopian novel.
The second book, Catching Fire, that deals with the fall out of the choices Katniss made in the first book, helps with more world building as the reader gets a sense of what Panem on the whole is like and begins to show the fires of rebellion stoked before Katniss is thrown back into the Hunger Games again. I enjoyed this one for the different, yet no less intense storyline showcasing the characters that were favourites in the first book and adding to that with new ones.
Mockingjay, however, I find very lackluster. The pacing is slower than the other two, there’s not much tension and then we’re sped to the end of the book within the last 50 pages without really getting any more substance to the story. The idea of hope and healing pervading over vengeance was a lovely thought, but I also didn’t enjoy that it was personified by Katniss having kids which seemed very out of character for her.
Nevertheless, The Hunger Games was the blueprint for the YA dystopian novel genre and the series still shines today despite the flooding of the market over time. Everyone should read it at least once.

I originally purchased this after watching the movies to preview them from my daughter to make sure there is no mature content for her to read them. While I have seen the moves for the hunger game, I found the book exciting and a little bit more detailed in the mind of Katniss. I’m reviewing the entire trilogy as a set event though it includes books you can buy separately. The books that make up this trilogy are
I loved that I could relate, feel abs even connect with the characters and their thoughts. I was surprised to find more information in the movie to expand on some of the dramatic scenes. I won’t be giving those away as I think everyone who loves a movie and then wants to read the books absolutely should.
I enjoyed this series, and I wanted the whole crew of people who became essential to our heroine Katniss. I enjoyed learning more about her thoughts and how she makes decisions. I really enjoyed the emotional connection she has to both Peeta and Gale. I also enjoyed seeing what the end result was of their love triangle.
This set of books was a great read and a fantastic movie. It didn’t have any explicit content besides the routine violence and descriptions of violence. I feel this set could be read by young adults and isn’t just for a mature audience.

Great female hero: flawed, unsure. Not too much romance. Just saw the first film, which left certain things out and therefore unclear, due to length constrictions, even then the film is nearly two and a half hours long.

Found the trilogy at a thrift store right before the movies were made. As I was reading them my sister informed me of the films. Books were a delight and couldn't wait to see the movies. The books were of course better that's how it goes!

Great trilogy. Would recommend to anyone. Gets a little lazy at the end, like the author was impatient to finish, but overall a great read.
