Title: Powerless
Author: Lauren Roberts
Page Count: 494
Time Length: N/A
Dates Read:6/1-6/4
Format: Physical
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review: Book one in the "Powerless" trilogy.
In a kingdom where a plague killed thousands of Ilyans, leaving the strongest to survive. All different kinds of supernatural abilities were bestowed upon Ilyans varying in strength, purpose, and power. These are called the Elite. Unfortunately, not everyone was given these powers. The Ordinaries were not fortunate enough to be gifted. The King only wants the Elite in his kingdom, so he creates the purging when a sickness starts going through the land. After three decades, the purging happens every 5 years for glory and shillings for the winning elite.
1st point of view is Pae. Who is an ordinary living in the slums and steals what she needs.
2nd point of view is Kai. Who is an Elite with the power to become the ability of any ability surrounding him. He is royalty born and is the future enforcer of the kingdom.
This was a wild ride. A Hunger games type book with better love interests and connections. This did have a lot of predictable tropes, but it didn't take away from the story for me. I loved the characters and the chemistry. That ending was everything that i did and didn't expect. I will be continuing with the trilogy. I can't wait for the next book.

Ok, this was a really enjoyable read, but there were some things that bothered me. Yes, I’m aware that this book has been advertised as a blend of popular dystopian books, but I think it gets to a point where it’s too much like them. Like, if I wanted to read The Hunger Games again I would. There were also just little things that annoyed me, and the story wasn’t good enough for me to overlook it.
Another thing I was confused about was why the trials were happening in the first place? What was the reason? I don’t know if I missed the explanation at the start of the book, or if I’m just missing it, but they didn’t seem to have a real purpose? Not like the games the districts are forced to participate in. I guess it’s a display of power and whatnot, but I hated feeling like there wasn’t a good reason for it.
Lastly, it was a little too predictable for my taste. So, yes I enjoyed it, but it hasn’t been one of my favorite fantasy reads of the year. I will be reading the next book, but this is definitely for those who didn’t grow up with the og books.

4.4 ⭐️ I’m still recovering from that finale… even if it isn’t extremely original (think Hunger Games meets Divergent kind of story), I loved the character building in this and the tensioooooon omg - this is the embodiment of enemies to lovers and slooooow burn (if we can even call it that). I honestly have no idea what to expect from the next book (I mean, I know what to expect and I know what I WANT to happen… I just have no idea if Lauren will give it to us at this point
