I had no idea what to expect going into this book, but the vibes were perfect. I really liked the in between stories from other characters, and I loved the ending.

Alas, I’m DNFing this one as the prose is so purple/lyrical I am not sure what is happening. I ended up rereading passages multiple times, not because they were particularly deep/complicated, but because I had no idea what was going on. It was very “we have always lived in castles” in tone, but that story told by someone in a dream who half remembers what happened

A evocative, almost poetic fableladen exploration of rural Australia and the gothic.

This book is written beautifully and reads like a fever dream. It’s an Australian Outback gothic horror/fairytale/mystery and I think the sparse landscape lends itself just as well to gothic ambience as the spooky-dreary-foggy-house on the moors aesthetic which is the more common setting for a gothic tale.

This book lacked what usually gets me hooked into stories: characters that you can really feel part of. The characters in Flyaway are written in a way that you do get to understand their personalities, but don't actually connect with them on a deeper level. Events in the story swept the characters along, feeling more like they were happening to them, rather than the characters taking much part in them. My favorite parts were the "story" interludes, where strange things happened, usually involving encounters with mysterious beasts. However, when this trickled into the main story, I was less convinced by it. This was a slim story and therefore I could recommend it, but it wasn't something I was emotionally or intellectually invested in.

This wasn’t a bad book, but I really disliked it. It wasn’t bad, which is why it’s getting two stars.
